See the future, be the future.
On these pages you will find explanations describing problems in our world and simple solutions for fixing them. The solutions are simple because they are obvious and inevitable. For example, if you want to live in a world without countries fighting wars with each other, eliminate having separate countries. Los Angeles is not likely to invade San Francisco with tanks and nuclear weapons, because they are part of the same, larger government. A single, worldwide government would make it possible to get rid of nuclear weapons because there would be no one to use them against. Creating a stable worldwide government requires enthusiastic support of the people, and that requires forming a government which benefits the masses in significant ways. Some of those benefits would include economic stability, guaranteed employment, free health care and education, minimal energy and housing costs, an end to global warming, elimination of homelessness and starvation, true personal freedoms, a world at peace, and more. The world is a mess now not because it has to be that way, but because people have had the wrong ideas about how to do things. Fixing the world will require all of us to change our minds about much of what we currently believe is ideal. While some of our ideas are correct, as a whole our current ideas aren't working and we have to be willing to admit that. But we can't simply change our minds because someone tells us to. We have to be convinced. We have to look at a new idea, compare it to our previous beliefs, observe all the positive possibilities and potential negative consequences, then choose to support the best idea available. In other words, we must use open minded reason to make our decisions. There is only one thing that can prevent us from living in a world of peace and prosperity, and that is self righteousness -- me and mine are more important than you and yours. Throughout history self righteousness has been the cause of nearly all human suffering other than natural disasters. My money, my land, my family, my country, my religion, my social position, etc., is more important than you and yours. Every war and injustice has self righteousness as it's source. Self righteousness is the dis-ease which makes humanity sick and insane, but it has a cure, and that cure is fairness. It has often been said that the world isn't fair, but isn't it time we made it fair? Communism was an attempt to be fair, but it fails because it's ethos is, "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need." In such a system the most successful are those with the least abilities and greatest needs. No one is motivated to do anything productive and everyone suffers as a result. Fairness doesn't mean everyone shares everything equally, because everyone isn't equal. Some people can run faster or jump higher, some love to think or to work, and some don't. People do not have equal abilities, but we are all entitled to equal rights and a fair playing field. Fairness means providing everyone with equal opportunities. It also means preventing those who can run faster from claiming all the land they get to first as their own. Fairness means providing those who contribute more with greater rewards, and those who contribute a less with a guaranteed minimum of comfortable conditions in return for a minimum contribution of effort. Whether someone chooses to contribute a lot or a little is a matter of free choice. It has to be a choice, because forcing anyone to do anything against their will is a sure way to make them unhappy, and unhappy people will eventually rise up and destroy their oppressors. In general terms, the more personal freedoms a society can provide it's citizens the happier those people will be. We are all born with unlimited freedom to do anything we choose. We can rape, murder, lie, cheat, anything we want. The only thing that stops us from such unethical behavior is our own choice to behave differently, though such choices are often influenced by fear of punishment or other negative consequences. When we believe that the negative consequences are fair, most of us have no trouble choosing to behave humanely and we do not resent the laws which govern our behavior. But when individuals believe the laws (or one's economic situation) is unfair, they tend to justify their actions and behave unjustly toward others. A fair and just society would attempt to maximize individual freedom of choice in every way possible, both economically and socially. These observations briefly explain why reason, fairness, opportunity and freedom need to be the fundamental principles of any successful society. Humanity can never live in peace if these principles are not expressed worldwide, but we have to begin somewhere. It starts with sharing these ideas with the people we know, then spreading them outward through our local communities and out into the larger world. Peace and prosperity truly begins in our own minds, by first seeking to cure ourselves of that terrible social disease called self righteousness. We all suffer from it, without exception, and the cure requires constant vigilance, constant awareness of the fact that we do not want to be self righteous. It's the only way anyone can have an open mind, and the only way this world can become the place of peace and prosperity it should be.
